Racing season almost here!

Well I have been hearing from some friends & family their racing plans for the year. Some are running triathlons to 5k, & even doing their first marathons. What a great time of the year to start training for one's ultimate goal. I myself have 5 weeks to my next run the Moab 100. I have been getting in some long runs/hikes leading up to my race to get my body in condition. We have been getting a lot of snow lately in Colorado so my training will pick up coming in the next three weeks. I usually take the last 2 weeks off before my race to recover then i'll be ready to tackle to race. I have 4 more long runs/hikes 25+ miles before my run that should bring me into decent shape. I have a lot of people asking me about my training & how fast I run in training. I usually do my less than 20 mile runs in 10 - 11:30 minute mile range depends on elevation. All my long runs 20+ I run in 12 - 13 minute mile range almost a fast hike w/ lots of walking. If I run 14:40 min average for 100 miles then I will be at 24 hours at the finish. So when my 100 mile races come along then a 13 - 14 minute mile seems like a walk in the park & I am able to do it all day long. I have been training w/ long runs for almost 4 years so it was a long process. Everyone who is starting off running like my wife is hesitant to run long because of the pain they think it will cause. Let me tell you it is painful at times but after you build up to it then your body adapts quickly to it. During a normal year I will run 40- 45 runs of 20+ miles with 10 of them being in the 35+ range. I love to hike all day in the summer time along the Colorado Trail. The miles just fly by and pretty soon i've done 30 miles. Well to everyone that is training for their races this year good luck to you & remember in the end the most important thing is to have fun.
Peace Stephen!
